Burnout Takes on a Whole New Meaning

Updated: Aug 7, 2020

Burnout. We typically hear this when we are talking about work. Well, in this COVID-19 world, burnout is more prevalent than ever. Chances are, that you are juggling multiple roles in a different way.

In the typical world, we get used to the stress that our roles demand. We adjust our energy to make all the moving pieces work together. We typically feel burnout when we add on an extra piece, or work gets busier, or we start a family. Same thing is relevant here. Yes, we may have more free time. Yes, we may be working from home. No, that does not mean that this is easier.

Since March we have all been adjusting our roles to work in this new environment. We were used to giving 100% at the office and 100% in our homes. Now those two worlds may live together. We label ourselves as failures, not productive, or lazy. Why can’t we do it all?!

So let’s normalize this! Of course you are burnt out! Now you may not have the luxury of focusing 100% of your time and energy at work and 100% at home. Now you are expected to do both… at the same time. That’s giving 200% in one environment. See how this equals burnout.

The answer- reset those darn expectations! No one is setting the bar for you except yourself. If some things fall to the wayside that doesn’t mean you are a failure, it simply means you are living in a pandemic.

Self-compassion is huge here. You are doing the best you can in this new world we live in. You are awesome, and sometimes we just need to step back and remember that.
